Welcome to Mowsley Parish![]() Mowsley lies within 25 miles of the geographical centre of England, near the southern tip of Leicestershire, 12 miles south of Leicester city and 6 miles north-west of Market Harborough. The parish sits atop a plateau that is the highest point for some miles around and forms an important watershed between rivers eventually flowing into the Wash, Humber and Bristol Channel. Despite being centrally located Mowsley has always been a bit off the beaten track, with major road, railway and canal all quite nearby without passing through. Today it has no shop or garage or any kind of productive business other than farming, but can boast a successful primary school and country pub, and quiet lanes to stroll and ride along through rolling hills and trees. In the Domesday Book Mowsley is referred to as Muselai, a name derived from the Old English 'Mus lai', meaning mouse infested clearance - hence the mice on the village signs. By the early 14th century the name was being spelled 'Mouselee' and, although the spelling has changed several times since, the pronunciation has remained to this day as 'Mouselea'. Just remember the mice on the village signs! |
